THE Renault Clio Williams was yesterday named the greatest hot hatch ever.

In a survey guaranteed to have boy racers drooling, experts said the 150bhp car - which went from 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds - was rated top for its mix of driving fun, pace, desirability and motorsport pedigree.

Produced for just three years from 1992 to 1995, the Clio Williams was launched by Renault after the hot hatch bubble burst in the late 1980s.

But such was the enthusiam for the car from fans that its production run of 500 sold out on day one.

It beat other hot hatches such as the Volkswagen Golf GTi, Ford Focus RS, Ford Escort XR3i and Mini Cooper.

Experts from Auto Express rated the greatest-ever hatchback sports cars from the last 30 years.

French-built cars took seven of the 20 places, with Renault and Peugeot dominating the list. The runner-up was the Peugeot 205 GTi, a favourite among speed-loving drivers on a budget in the 1980s and 1990s.

The 205 cost £9300 when it was launched in 1984 and could rocket to 60mph in 7.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 120mph.

At number three was Renaultsport's Clio 200 Cup, which went on sale last year at a price of £16,500 and can reach 140mph.
